What is chief doublehead?

Chief Doublehead (1744-1807) was a prominent Cherokee leader and warrior during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was born in present-day Tennessee and belonged to the Cherokee Wolf Clan.

Doublehead was known for his military prowess and played a significant role in supporting British forces during the Revolutionary War. He also led Cherokee forces in several battles against European settlers and other Native American tribes.

In 1785, Doublehead became one of the primary chiefs of the Cherokee Nation and was known for advocating for peaceful relations with the United States. However, his position was often challenged by rival factions within the tribe who felt he was too accommodating to U.S. interests.

In the early 1800s, Doublehead controversially signed the Treaty of Tellico with U.S. officials, ceding much of the Cherokee's Tennessee lands to the United States. This decision ultimately resulted in Doublehead's assassination by members of his own tribe who viewed him as a traitor.
